A couple of weekends ago, the RISFC celebrated its 30th Anniversary with a trip to the Newport Playhouse. We enjoyed good food, great entertainment, and all in the company of some great friends. The night was an awesome success!
One of the surprises of the evening for me, was being presented with an award for my work as Chairman of this merry crew for most of its existence. We've all taken turns over the years holding the office of Chairman, Vice chair, Secretary, Leader of the Snacks, and other self important titles. I've managed to hold the Chairman's job, because of this one reason: I enjoyed serving my friends, and wanted them to have the best Sci-Fi club experience. For the most part, it's worked. So now I have this really cool trophy for doing what has been a labor of love all these years. Thanks, it's nice to be recognized and appreciated.
Now, we have our detractors. There are former members of this club who pushed to have us disband, mostly for selfish, power hungry reasons. But we prevailed. There are people from other Fan clubs who thought we wouldn't last, because we were a spin-off of their group. That group went extinct a long time ago, but we're celebrating 31 years in September (September 28, to be exact.).
We've had a low of 15 members, and a high of close to 50. We've always been a low-key, 'meet once monthly and have fun' kind of organization, never really wanting an extensive membership ( and the headaches that go with it. Think Starfleet). At a R.I. Comiccon some years ago, a fan visiting our table mentioned that he's lived in the state all his life, and never knew about the R.I. Science Fiction Club. I guess we're the best kept secret in New England Fandom.
So what does the future hold for us? I don't know, I'm not the Chairman, but I do enjoy being your Communications Chair, and will continue to serve in whatever capacity this organization needs me, including the Leader of the Snacks. Whatever the future holds for the RISFC, I have every confidence that it will insure that some day, we will celebrate that 50th anniversary.
