So it's been almost a week since I saw the film 'Justice League' in the theater. This is a movie I've wanted to see since I was a kid; being a big fan of DC comics, and the Justice League, I figured it was a no-brainer. What was the result? A movie that was good, but not great.Warning: there are spoilers galore in this review, so if you haven't seen it yet, best to wait and read this after you've sat through this film.
Zack Snyder/Joss Whedon's Justice League covers all the basics fans expected: time for all the heroes to shine, a tough evil villian to defeat, and some comedy moments. But because there were two directors involved here, the film seems disjointed. You can tell where Snyder directed when you see the slow-mo bullets flying, then the action speeds up again. The comedy sections belong to Whedon. Speaking of comedy, the Flash had the most laughs, and Momoa's Aquaman had some cool quips too. I look forward to his solo film.
I liked Steppenwolf as the villian, his CGI'd character was well done, anad a formidable foe for the heroes. In my opinion, Wonder Woman was the coolest JL'r in the bunch. My wife mentioned that Superman was a 'little off' in this movie, and I agree. Of course, if you were just resurrected from the dead by an alien Motherbox, you'd be kinda off too.
Batman, Cyborg, Superman, Flash, and Aquaman all had important parts to play in the story, and I liked the nice touches from secondary characters, like Mera, and the Green Lantern we see in the 'History' section of the film.
But I left Justice League feeling like it should have been more fun. I enjoyed it, but I thought it should have been lighter, and took itself just a little too seriously.
Does the negative press and reviews of this film mean trouble for the upcoming DC films? I don't think so, those movies can stand on their own, but I still feel that DC does a better job with its TV series' and animated releases, while Marvel dominates the movies.
I always consider a movie a success if I'm willing to own a dvd copy for my collection, and in this case, Justice League was good enough to qualify.
