Hello June, and welcome to Summer! The RISFC has some great activities lined up for this month, including our Annual picnic on the 17th, and some cool Movie nights. As far as the picnic is concerned, this year it's at Goddard State park, instead of Colt State park in Bristol. Here's hoping the change in venue also means nicer weather, since the 2016 picnic was rainy, wet, and well, wet.
June also means it's not too late to start thinking about RISFC Board team elections. Yes, it's been two years already, and we need to begin the process of deciding who will be running this Club. To that end, I want to talk about the Team concept.
When I proposed the Team concept two years ago, I did so for several reasons: I had been Chairman of this Club for what seemed like about a million years (give or take a millennia), and wanted us to be in a position where we wouldn't be so dependent on one person pretty much running things. Yes, before you start saying he's too full of himself, and others have been helping too, I know that. I also think it's important to have as many people as possible involved, and the tasks get easier that way. Teams running organizations are also the way most companies and clubs like ours will be getting things done in the future, and what better way to grow a Club like ours, then embracing those changes.
So how are we doing? Without going into specifics, some of the teams are doing well, others, not so much. That's expected for a Club that's trying new leadership techniques. Perhaps the Executive Team only needs two people instead of three? Maybe some who decided to help have realized leading a team is not something they'd like to continue, helping "in the background" is preferred. That's cool too.
My hope is that, although there have been disappointments as well as successes, the Team concept continues. I don't want to see us get into a position where one or two people run the Club, and people get too comfortable. "Oh, I don't have to worry about the RISFC getting things done, cause 'so-and-so' will take care of it." Uh uh, that idea's gotta go.
Clubs like ours only succeed, and thrive, and create positive change in their communities, when they inspire to include everyone to get active, even for only one or two events a year. So please think about this when it's time for elections in the Fall, and don't be afraid to get involved.
