But we're also using this meeting to help a cause that's near and dear to our Club Treasurer, Dawne DelaCruz, and that's donating materials to help knit mats for the cages in animal shelters.
These mats can be made from using old sweaters you no longer want. Simply used the body of the sweater, sewing the arms so the ends will not ravel, then cut the arms off. If you have washable yarn hanging around and do not want to knit the square, donate the yarn to the project. We'll be collecting it at the club meetings. If you want to create a mat, knit up a square (at least 18 inches square) or use an end table to measure. Animals vary in size from cats and 'mini' designer dogs that are not longer "cute" to German Shepards. The project hopes to provide these abandoned animals some warmth and comfort by providing a warm and soft mat to lay or sit on in the cage. Shelters just do not have the funds to provide these extras. The shelters more in need, such as the shelter in North Kingstown R.I. off Rt 4 is one such example. It would be nice if we could create enough items to donate these mats to at least two or three shelters- perhaps a dozen to each one. So if you have the desire to help these animals in need, please consider donating at our next meeting.
