Templecon 2013

The Sci Fi Journal crew will be attending one of our favorite conventions, Templecon 2013. It's being held Feb. 1-3, 2013, at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick, R.I.

This is year 8 for the convention, which focuses on all types of gaming, including RPG's, tabletop and board games, miniatures, and an arcade. It also has a post-apocalyptic/steampunk/futurist theme, so there are plenty of fans roaming the halls in unique costumes. Guests include staff from Privateer Press, belly dancing by R.I. local artist Sumara, and performances by our friends the RKO Army.

Mattel toys has announced that, due to popular demands, plans are in the works to reproduce the Castle Grayskull playset, made popular in the 80's as part of the Masters of the Universe toy line.

Pre-orders started October 16, 2012, with a $250 price tag, and limits of 20 sets per customer. Just like the vintage set, it will fit most Masters figures, be a two-sided foldout, and have lots of goodies like trap doors, secret rooms, and space to display your MOTU figures.

Changes are still being made to the project, but Mattel will reveal a prototype at the February 2013 New York Toy Fair.

Captain Action Arctic Adventurer

If you grew up in the 60's like I did, you know about Captain Action, the action figure from the now-defunct Ideal Toy company, who could change into a number of superheroes, like Superman, Batman, Captain America, and more.

Years later, he was re-released by the Praying Mantis toy company, and has now been picked up by Captain Action Enterprises, a group of guys my age, who love the toy line and are offering a number of new Captain Action toys and products.

One of those new releases is the 'Captain Action Arctic Adventurer' figure, featuring the good Captain in a new blue and white thermal costume, with white gloves, hat, and accessories. While this figure has a more articulate body, it also has a new face sculpt, which I'm personally not too fond of, but it's okay. I prefer the original face, with its Roy Rogers/Clint Black looks. The figure can be bought at Toys R Us for $29.99, and you can find more info at www.captainaction.com.
