The Last Jedi was first in ticket sales during its opening weekend by a tremendous margin, selling $220 million in North America. In fact, the second installment in the third Star Wars trilogy is the second highest selling box office opening weekend of all time.
The film, directed by Rian Johnson, is bested only by its series predecessor The Force Awakens.Along with The Force Awakens, which made $248.8 million during its debut, The Last Jedi is the fourth film to have an opening weekend over $200 million. The other two are similarly action blockbusters – The Avengers at $207.4 million and Jurassic World at $208.8 million.
Internationally, The Last Jedi cleared $230 million making the three-day worldwide total $450 million.
In total, The Force Awakens grossed $2.1 billion total and last year’s standalone film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story totaled over $1 billion worldwide. Based on those stats, and its opener, it looks like The Last Jedi is on track for another huge theatrical run for the Star Wars franchise.
