Michael Crichton, RIP

Michael Crichton died Tuesday at age 66 after a private battle with cancer in Los Angeles.

“While the world knew him as a great story teller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us — and entertained us all while doing so — his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes,” his family said on his site.
“He did this with a wry sense of humor that those who were privileged to know him personally will never forget.”

While studying at Harvard Med, he wrote a series of novels under the pen names John Lange and Jeffrey Hudson. One of these, “A Case of Need,” won the 1969 Edgar Award for best novel.

The first novel written under his own name, 1969’s “The Andromeda Strain,” was quickly made into a 1971 movie directed by Robert Wise. It was recently remade as a made-for-cable movie which garnered 6 primetime emmy nominations despite it’s less than critical reception.

It was the first in a long line of Crichton novels adapted for the screen, among them “A Case of Need” (which became “The Carey Treatment”), “The Terminal Man,” “The Great Train Robbery,” “Eaters of the Dead” (which became “The Thirteenth Warrior”), “Congo,” “Sphere,” “Jurassic Park,” “Rising Sun,” “Disclosure,” “The Lost World” and “Timeline.”

Crichton novels optioned for the big screen but yet unmade include “Airframe,” “Prey,” “State of Fear” and “Next.”

He also directed several movies from his own original screenplays, including “Westworld,” “Coma,” “The Great Train Robbery,” “Looker,” and “Runaway.”

He directed “Physical Evidence,” for which he did not receive screenplay credit, and wrote “Twister,” which he did not direct.

He created “ER,” which is on it’s 15 and final season on television.

If all that’s not enough to account for his 66 years on the planet, he was also a practicing M.D. and authored four works of non-fiction: “Five Patients,” “Jasper Johns,” “Electronic Life” and “Travels.”

Moshi Monsters

There’s a new site out there for those that like to play online games. Moshi Monsters is an online pet site with a twist. Instead of the usual cute and fluffy pet, users get to chose a monster from the somewhat gross Zommer (or zombie) to the grumpy although very fluffy, Furi.

Each Monster has a lively personality that develops the more

PRESS RELEASE: Dabel Brothers Publishing is excited to premiere the first eleven pages (DOWNLOAD HERE) of the much-anticipated Dabel Brothers project, “Mercy Thompson: Homecoming”. Artist Francis Tsai beautifully illustrates all the covers and interior pages to this series, with author Patricia Briggs herself penning the original story. Place your orders today before the first issue ships this November.

“The artwork is impressive and beautiful,” says Patricia Briggs. “I think we’ve captured exactly what the world of Mercy Thompson is all about—real world troubles like getting a job and paying the bills—broken up by moments of terror and humor. Fun stuff. I’m so excited about this project!”

For those unfamiliar with the work, Mercedes “Mercy” Thompson is a Volkswagen mechanic—she’s also a coyote shapeshifter and an observer of the supernatural community, though not part of it: she’s the perfect intermediary between the things that go bump in the night . . . and the things that bump back. This prequel to the best-selling Mercy Thompson novels finds Mercy smack in the middle of warring packs of werewolves and face to face with angry vampires. Worse still, she faces the dreaded job interview!

Want to compare the size of a Star Destroyer with the Enterprise? How does the Cloverfield Monster look next to Godzilla? You can find the answers and more by exploring Starship Dimensions: a museum of speculative fiction inspired spaceships.

Creator Jeff Russell updates the site frequently, so there’s always something new to explore. You can zoom in and out of the site, and look at huge spaceships like the Death Star, or smaller ones like Dr. Who’s TARDIS.  And there are a number of creatures to compare, too.

“And Another Thing …,” will be published by Penguin in October 2009. This new addition to the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” will be written by children’s author Eoin Colfer who has said he was a big fan of the original books and the BBC radio serial.

Douglas Adam’s widow Jane Belson has given her blessing to the irish writer of the Artemis Fowl series.

“For years I have been finishing this incredible story in my head and now I have the opportunity to do it in the real world,” said Colfer. “It is a gift from the Gods. So, thank you Thor and Odin.”

Adams died seven years ago in California from a heart attack at the age of 49.  He had hoped to finish the series with a sixth book.  “Five seems to be a wrong kind of number; six is a better kind of number,” he once said.

The satirical books tell the story of a hapless Englishman called Arthur Dent who travels the universe after the Earth is demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass.

The saga centers on the search for the answer to “life, the universe and everything,” which after a long wait turns out to be 42. Penguin Managing Director Helen Fraser said she hoped Colfer would attract new readers to the books.

Boom! Comics has announced that it will be producing a new series based on the SF series Farscape, which ran for four seasons on the Sci Fi Channel.

If BatMan had a cat

Source: Scoop online magazine

Two year-old house cat Yoda was born with four ears, making him a very good listener.
Rescued by Valerie from a Chicago bar, she took him home with her.
The wise Jedi master Yoda, the cat’s namesake

If Batman had a cat, it would probably look something like this. Meet Yoda, a housecat born with a second set of ears.

Yoda’s owners rescued the poor creature as a kitten when they saw him being passed around at their local bar by curious drinkers. He was one of a larger litter and they were looking for a home for him.

The couple immediately fell for the unusual feline and asked the owner if they could adopt him. He agreed and the couple named the cat Yoda, after the pointy-eared Jedi knight in Star Wars.

Valerie, 65, said, “We were at a pub on the south side of Chicago with a group of friends when we noticed a small cage sitting on the bar and people passing around a kitten. He had been part of a large litter and the owners were looking to find a home for him. Ted and I had just lost a cat that was our pet for over 20 years, and we were sure we were done with cats. When he was passed around he reached for Ted, crawled up into the crook of his neck and fell asleep - Ted was a goner. It was a done deal when the kitten made himself at home on Ted’s shoulder. We decided to name him Yoda. I understand the Star Wars character was based on George Lucas’ cat.”

After adopting the eight week-old kitten into their Illinois home, Valerie decided to have Yoda checked out with the local vet. The vet was mystified by his distinctive appearance.

“The vet had never seen anything like it before,” explains Valerie. “He immediately went to the Internet and found the four-eared cat in Germany.” The vet explined that Yoda has extra ‘flaps’ that are separate to the base of his skull, with one placed slightly behind the other.

The only other weird thing about the cat is that he has a curious obsession with bread. “I can’t leave bread on the counter for a minute,” explains Valerie.

Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, and Aaron Eckhart as the Joker, Batman, and Harvey Dent/Two-Face
Batman finally gets his hands on the Joker
Batman’s exciting new toy: the Batpod

After a successful relaunching of the Batman film series in 2005, excellent promotion, and promises of a much, ahem, darker approach to the franchise, expectations were high for The Dark Knight’s opening weekend. According to the head of distribution for Warner Bros., Dan Fellman, the studio was surprised by how much the film made. Just how much? A whopping $155.34 million.

The colossal amount, produced in only three days, marks a new Hollywood record for highest grossing opening weekend. That record was made only a year ago in May 2007 by Spider-Man 3 with an opener of $151.1 million. It also broke the record for IMAX opening with $6.2 million versus Spider-Man 3’s $4.7 million. However, based on the rise in admission prices, Spider-Man 3 may still have sold more tickets. Media By Numbers estimated that Spider-Man 3 sold 21.96 million tickets, while The Dark Knight sold slightly less at 21.94 million, making the record somewhat of a superhero tie.

The Dark Knight was released amid a grand range of filmmaker and film-goer opinions. First, there was speculation at how Australian actor Heath Ledger would fair as the Joker, a role previously mastered by the iconic Jack Nicholson, then after snippets of his performance were revealed excitement built higher for the flick, followed by a sorrowful reaction to the talented young actor’s untimely death last January, ending with a fevered pitch of excitement for the film’s release over the past few weeks. It is speculated that Ledger’s performance may not only earn him a posthumous Academy Award, but will mark the first tangible Oscar nomination to an actor for a comic character role.

Demand was so high for opening day showings that some theaters added, not just midnight shows but also ones at 3:00 and 6:00 AM. With such a massive first weekend, which made $67.85 million on the first day alone, The Dark Knight may create a new box office record for total sales. The current box office record for the Caped Crusader is held by Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman, also featuring a battle between Batman and the Joker, with a worldwide total of $251 million, Batman Begins came in second with $205 million. The Dark Knight will most likely beat that within the next ten days.
